A gongfu tea table is not simply a surface for brewing. It is a composed space — one where each object has a role, a position, and a presence.
Start with the Tea Tray
The tea tray anchors the entire table. Choose a tray that suits your brewing style: a dry-style tray (干泡盘) keeps water contained in a small vessel beneath, while a wet-style tray drains freely. A lacquered tray brings warmth and depth — the surface develops character over time. A red brick tray, inspired by Minnan architecture, adds texture and a sense of place.
Place the Teapot at the Center

Leave Space
The most common mistake is filling the table too completely. Empty space is not absence — it is part of the composition. Leave room for the eye to move, for the hand to reach, for the practice to breathe.
